Fort Kent ~ Recently, Northern Maine Medical Center (NMMC) joined other area hospitals and the New England Organ Bank (NEOB) in the National Hospital Organ Donation Campaign. This campaign challenges hospitals to educate employees, patients, visitors, and the community about the crucial need for organ, eye, and tissue donation. The hospital’s campaign is a special effort of the Workplace Partnership for Life (WPFL), an initiative sponsored by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration, to enlist companies and organizations to be partners in promoting donor registration. The goal of the national campaign is to register 100,000 new donor designations by May 2015. NMMC is aiming to register new organ donor designations to the state registry so as to contribute to the national goal, and to earn national recognition from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for conducting activities that promote enrollment in state organ donor registries. Points are earned for each activity implemented by a participating organization between August 2014, and May 2015, and will be recognized nationally for collecting enough points to reach a gold, silver, or bronze level. In 2014, NMMC earned the bronze award for its work in supporting the campaign.
