Fort Kent ~ Trauma surgeon, general surgeon and surgical critical care intensivist, Dr. David Coffman, presented a Continuing Medical Education (CME) program at Northern Maine Medical Center (NMMC) on January 28, 2015 on the topic of pediatric trauma. The CME focused largely on the incidence, epidemiology and management of all types of trauma in the pediatric population.
Class participants numbered nearly forty and included representation from medical staff, nursing students, technicians, therapists and nurses. Coffman presented some sobering statistics describing pediatric trauma as largely preventable. The most common causes of pediatric trauma are: falls, followed by motor vehicle accidents, pedestrian and bicycle accidents and assault.
According to Critical Care Medicine journal, trauma is the leading cause of death in people ages one to forty four and it is the fourth leading cause of death among all ages. More people die from trauma each year than AIDS, cancer and heart disease combined.
