Fort Kent ~ Travis Jandreau, Northern Maine Medical Center’s (NMMC) Laboratory Supervisor celebrated Medical Laboratory Professionals Week with his team. The event is an annual celebration of the laboratory professionals and pathologists who play a vital role in every aspect of health care. Since the development of this career group in the 1920s, the clinical laboratory science professional has played an increasingly vital role in the diagnosis and prevention of disease. They often work behind the scenes and few people know about the critical testing they perform every day. According to the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science (ASCLS), approximately 300,000 practitioners of clinical laboratory science perform and interpret more than ten billion laboratory tests in the United States every year.
In conjunction with the national celebration, the NMMC Laboratory had additional reason to celebrate professional accomplishments. Peter Sirois, NMMC CEO, was on hand April 23rd to congratulate the laboratory team for the successful accreditation survey completed by the Joint Commission on April 7 and 8. Sirois was notified on April 10 by Mark G. Pelletier, RN, MS, and Chief Operating Officer for the Division of Accreditation and Certification Operations, that NMMC had successfully completed the survey process. Jandreau said, “After two days of rigorous surveying of the eleven hundred and forty Joint Commission laboratory standards, I am proud to report that the whole team did a great job”! He went on to say that the unannounced laboratory survey is not only a measure of meeting the regulations and standards but it is also a measure of the daily commitment to providing safe and quality patient care.
