Northern Maine Medical Center and its laboratory have earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Accreditation by demonstrating continuous compliance with its performance standards. The Gold Seal is a symbol of quality that reflects a health care organization’s commitment to providing safe and quality patient care. NMMC and the hospital laboratory have earned national accreditation from The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals since 1962. The accreditation status keeps us aligned with our mission to provide outstanding care. It also benefits us by keeping our staff and our organization on top of the latest trends in health care quality.

Hospitals participating in The Joint Commission’s accreditation process receive expert assistance and support from individual account executives and standards implementation and patient safety experts. Joint Commission-certified surveyors provide a rigorous evaluation of the hospital’s patient care processes and helpful expert advice on how to The Joint Commission’s standards are developed in consultation with health care experts and providers, measurement experts and patients. NMMC was granted accreditation for all services surveyed under the applicable manual(s):

  • Comprehensive Accreditation Manual for Laboratory and Point-of-Care Testing
  • Comprehensive Accreditation Manual for Hospitals

They are informed by scientific literature and expert consensus to help health care organizations measure, assess and improve performance. The surveyors also conducted onsite observations and interviews.

The Leapfrog Group Safety Grade

The Leapfrog Group, an independent national watchdog organization driven by employers and other purchasers of healthcare, is committed to improving healthcare quality and safety for consumers and purchasers. Developed under the guidance of a national Expert Panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses twenty-eight measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to more than 2,600 U.S. acute-care hospitals twice per year. The Hospital Safety Grade’s methodology is peer-reviewed and fully transparent, and the results are free to the public. The transparent hospital performance reports provide consumers with the lifesaving information they need to make informed decisions. A ‘C’ grade for safety is a national distinction, recognizing Northern Maine Medical Center’s achievements in protecting patients from harm and providing safer healthcare. Recognition from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid

Northern Maine Medical Center was informed by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services that it had earned a 5-star recognition for patient experience and a 3-star overall rating for performance in clinical quality measures.

Gold Star Standards of Excellence Platinum Recognition

Northern Maine Medical Center has received Platinum Recognition by the Gold Star Standards of Excellence in 2018, 2019, and 2020.

The Gold Star Standards of Excellence recognizes achievement in compliance to the ten best practice Gold Star Standards defined by the Maine Tobacco-Free Hospital Network. Some of the best practices included in the ten standards are: reducing tobacco use and creating tobacco-free areas for patients, employees and visitors through evidence-based strategies; providing training, policies, and assistance to quit and must not support or accept any contributions from tobacco companies.
