Northern Maine Medical Center’s (NMMC) Emergency Department is classified as a Level III. The national designation refers to the kinds of resources available in a trauma center. As a Level III Trauma Center, NMMC has demonstrated an ability to provide prompt assessment, resuscitation, surgery, intensive care and stabilization of injured patients and emergency operations. Key elements of a Level III Trauma Center include 24-hour immediate coverage by emergency medicine physicians and the prompt availability of general surgeons and anesthesiologists.
The Emergency Department is located on the first floor of the hospital. In 2015, the Emergency Department was rebuilt to increase efficiency, provide a more quiet area, and to enhance confidentiality, safety and patient comfort. The department includes a private ambulance entrance separate from a walk-in entrance, a large trauma room, a dedicated decontamination area, advanced cardiac monitoring system with private exam rooms and a nurse call system. In addition to general exam rooms, specialty exam rooms are available for: ear, nose and throat; psychiatry; pediatrics and gynecology.
NO ONE seeking medical attention will be denied service for any reason, including insurance coverage or the inability to pay for services.
The quality and appropriateness of patient care in the Emergency Department is continuously reviewed and evaluated through established quality improvement processes.
Mission
The mission of the Emergency Department is to assess, diagnose and treat patients with urgent and non-urgent conditions, chronic or acute, of all ages regardless of patient’s ability to pay.
